Aloha!
This time of year reminds us of the power of connection — of how kindness and compassion can bring comfort to those who need it most. At Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels, we’re humbled by the stories of those we serve, each one a reminder that no matter where life takes us, we all need nourishment.
One of these stories belongs to a familiar face in Hawai‘i’s history. Born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, Jerome Freeman was the third of eight children. Across the street from his family’s home stood a neighborhood park. It was there that he first heard the bounce of a basketball. That sound became his compass, a steady beat that kept him grounded and focused throughout life’s challenges.
Basketball led Jerome across the Pacific to the University of Hawai‘i, where he became one of the legendary members of the “Fabulous 5.” In the early 1970s, he and his teammates captured the hearts of basketball fans across the islands, bringing national attention to the Rainbow Warriors and igniting a wave of local pride. For Jerome, those were the glory days.
But life after the spotlight brought unexpected challenges. After playing internationally, Jerome returned to Hawai‘i and worked various jobs to stay afloat. When the pandemic hit, he lost his job and found himself without a home. With the support of the community, he was able to secure stable housing in 2023 and began rebuilding his life.
Last summer, Jerome began receiving home-delivered meals. It was soon after he suffered a stroke that affected the right side of his body. For him, these meals mean far more than daily nourishment — they bring comfort and conversation.
”“Jerome’s name is known all over Hawai‘i, but when I bring him his meals, he’s just another neighbor. What a privilege to serve someone who has gave so much joy to our community,” Jon shared.
This summer, Jerome was invited back to Chicago to be inducted into his high school’s hall of fame. When he returned home to Hawai‘i, he was eager to catch up with Jon, sharing stories and photos from his trip.
”“Getting these meals reminds me that people still care,” Jerome said. “It’s not just about the food. It’s the kindness that comes with it.”
Jerome’s journey reminds us that even those who once stood in the spotlight may one day need the support and care of others. His story embodies what Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels is all about: Every person deserves care, connection, and nourishment.
As we celebrate this season of giving, thank you for remembering those like Jerome who are in need of home-delivered meals. Your generosity makes it possible for us to deliver more than a meal — it delivers hope. Will you consider making a gift to provide nourishing meals to kūpuna?
This holiday, please give generously to Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels. Together, we can ensure that no one — not even our hometown heroes — is forgotten or left hungry. One meal, one visit, one act of aloha at a time.
