Meet Rod, a spirited 73-year-old who has faced his fair share of challenges, but continues to persevere with faith and positivity. Rod found himself in a difficult position after a knee replacement. He was struggling to get groceries and lacking the support of family nearby.
“My left leg was already busted after a motor vehicle accident, and then my right knee was giving out,” Rod shared. “I’d usually go to the food distribution center to pick up some produce. But I was struggling to even stand in line.”
It was his case worker who recommended that Rod, who lives alone, reach out to Hawai’i Meals on Wheels to help him through this transition. With the support of our dedicated social services team and meal delivery volunteers, he began receiving five meals a week, which allowed him to heal and rest at home.
For Rod, these meals are more than just sustenance. Despite facing health challenges, Rod remains determined to care for himself and his beloved dogs. Meals mean he’s able to care for sweet Marcie and playful Lil Bit, who are not only his constant companions but also a source of strength and motivation.
“I want to be here 10 years from now for them,” Rod says with tears in his eyes. “They mean so much to me. I want to stay healthy so I can be there for them.”
Earlier this month, Rod underwent a surgical procedure to remove metal pins from his foot. On the day he was discharged, we ensured Rod received a hot meal upon his return home. But it didn’t stop there –our team also brought a bag of dog food for Marcie and Lil Bit, ensuring both Rod and his canine friends were well cared for during his recovery.
“Hawai’i Meals on Wheels treats me exceptionally well. The meal delivery drivers go out of their way to put a smile on my face. I appreciate all the staff and volunteers!” Rod expresses his gratitude. “You guys have been there for me through my toughest times.”
Seeing the meal delivery drivers every weekday fosters a sense of belonging and connection. And the meals evoke fond memories of his grandparents, who raised him, and of their home, a place of warmth and love.
“When my grandma cooked, I’d eat everything. I just love eating! In fact, there’s very little I don’t eat,” Rod reminisces with a smile. “My favorite meal on your menu is the cabbage rolls, which remind me of my grandma’s. And I love the fresh side salads!”
