Of 320 volunteers for Hawaii Meals on Wheels, Kelly Villaverde is one of a kind.
"I wanted to keep doing it but I didn't see how," he said.
Like all people who volunteer to deliver the food, Villaverde pays for his own fuel. He used to drive a truck. Gas prices caused him to downsize to a moped.
"It's still fossil fuel but it's a lot less," he said.

Gala 2008 – Mark Your Calendar |
|
|
|
|
This year’s Annual Gala will be held on Thursday, September 25, at The Willows. Please mark your calendar and plan on joining us!
Since 1979, Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels volunteers have personally delivered nearly 1,000,000 hot meals to elderly and homebound individuals on O‘ahu. Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels is committed to meeting the challenge of providing nutritious hot meals to Hawai‘i’s rapidly growing senior and disabled populations. Our service makes a vital difference to thousands of homebound clients, one life at a time.
We need your help to meet this challenge.
Donations will help tremendously to enhance the event and reduce operating costs. The following are some of the items or services that would be greatly appreciated:
- Silent auction items or services such as airline tickets, hotel stays, golf packages, restaurant certificates
- Printing services
- Graphic design services
- Advertising support
- Entertainment
- Sound system
- Monetary donations are always appreciated!
Please call 988-6747 for more information regarding table sponsorships, ticket purchases and/or donations. We look forward to seeing you on September 25!
Your contribution will help us celebrate “Meals From the Heart 2008” and sustain our mission for the future.

Meals on Wheels gets $25,000 |

Hawaii Meals on Wheels has received a $25,000 grant from the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation to purchase two cars for the delivery of hot meals to homebound seniors and disabled people.
The grant will purchase two "new and safe" Honda Fit vehicles to continue "our mission of ensuring that those who cannot leave their homes and who cannot cook for themselves receive nutritious hot meals and regular personal interaction," said Claire Shimabukuro, Meals on Wheels executive director.
Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization founded in 1979 that relies on more than 300 volunteers who bring hot meals every weekday to elderly and homebound disabled people on 40 delivery routes throughout Oahu, a release said.
The foundation is the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank.
